The Do Selfish Well Newsletter’s Introspection Song of the Week series is meant to aid your self-exploration by uniquely tying songs with thought-provoking topics that get you to think about yourself in new ways. Check out the full-length newsletters for more in-depth discussions on select topics.
Many of the songs so far have had messages related to looking inward to acknowledge and accept the parts of ourselves that we may not like or may even hate. This has been on purpose because we will never love ourselves unless we do. Maybe you've identified some parts of yourself, or some aspects of your life, that you’d like to be different and the idea of trying therapy has popped into your head, but something is still holding you back. You are not alone. That is a completely natural response.
Emotional change can feel destabilizing. Your brain may feel threatened that you'll find an error in its code, which might mean there are even larger errors in its code, because if that was wrong, what else is wrong? So, your brain sends out fear signals. Plus, add on the vulnerability required for sharing things with the therapist you may have never shared with anyone else. It can feel like a lot.
If it feels like too much right now, then maybe you still need a little more space and a little more time like Teddy Swims. He’s said publicly that he has no doubt therapy will help him, but he’s just not ready yet, and that’s what this song is about. You'll know when you're ready, and it's never too late to leave baggage behind.
Take Care of Yourself,
Alex
